Six Practical Steps to Get More Clients for Your Law Firm

May 30, 2024

A lot of law firm owners struggle with getting clients. If you have a law firm and you can relate, you should know that there are some very good practical steps that can help you get more clients.

Read on to learn more.

Tune into an Abundance Mindset

The first thing you should do is to let go of your limiting belief that you might not get clients. Be absolutely clear that there are plenty of clients out there, which means there are thousands of clients for your practice area.

So, you should put yourself in that mentality of the opposite of scarcity. Shift into the abundance mentality and know that there are plenty of clients out there. It is just up to you for you to go and get them.

Establish the Client’s Avatar

Once you have tuned into the abundance mentality, the next step is to start with the “who.” Know your customer avatar – this is not only a marketing thing but also crucial to the core of your law firm. Understanding “who” your ideal customer is is absolutely crucial as it lays out the plan for you going forward.

Answer the following questions:

  • Who are your potential clients?
  • What are their desires?
  • What are their fears?
  • What is the specific problem that they have?
  • What are the top three results you can get from them?
  • When establishing your ideal client’s avatar, you can also assess other aspects, such as how old they are, what they look like, and where they live.

Make sure you are crystal clear about these aspects because this will make your marketing much easier.

Understand Your Law Firm is Not About You

If you want to get clients onboard, you need to understand that your law firm is about your clients. Your law firm is not about you. On that note, assess your website and analyze how much it is about your clients and how much it is about you.

Speaking of your website, check out this Guide to SEO for lawyers and see how you can tweak your website in a way that your clients can find you at the top of SERPs. Nonetheless, you must ensure that your website is user-friendly and Google-friendly so you can attract your ideal customers.

You want to avoid the mistake of turning 80% of your website about you, as this is the primary mistake that most law firms make with their websites. They keep telling on their websites about what they can do and who they are.

Instead of making a similar mistake, you need to flip the script of your website and ensure that your website is 80% about your clients and their problems, desires, and challenges. Your website should depict who your clients are and what their challenges are, and make the rest of the website, which is the remaining 20%, about you and what you do.

Know the Two Ways of Getting Clients

As a law firm operating in 2024, you should know that there are only two ways to get clients. It can be either paid or organic. Having this knowledge can make it super easy for you to pick the path that you want to take. Now, the question is how you can choose between these two paths, and the answer depends on whether you have time or money.

If you have time on your hands, you will take the organic route, but if you have money to invest, you can take the paid route.

Now, if you are just starting out, you are starting with the organic route usually because you might not have tons of money, but you have plenty of time to focus on organic. On the other hand, if you have been running your business for some time and you have less time now but more money, you can focus on the paid route.

The paid route is also much easier as it enables you to get more clients quickly. It is also more trackable. It is also more scalable compared to the organic route, which is lower in growth, and you have less control. The organic route depends on more factors versus the paid route, which, if you get it right – you can be immensely successful in getting more clients onboard.

Provide Value to Your Clients

The rule is as simple as this: the amount of clients you get is directly proportional to the amount of value you provide. A lot of lawyers who struggle to get clients don’t provide much value to their own leads and communities.

They also don’t provide much value to their own Facebook groups and their own channel and blog articles. On that note, ask yourself the important question of where you are producing content and where you are giving value.

Perhaps, you should get into the giving mentality and how you can give endlessly as this is where the clients will come to you in abundance as a result.  So, provide value without expectations to your clients. The thing about expectations is that expecting things to go your way can hold you back.

Instead, only focus on value and giving and doing because this is when good things happen. You need to drop your expectations.

Place Your Focus on the Right Area

The next step that can help you get more clients for your law firm is to focus on the top source of your clients because most of your clients will come through that source. All you need to do is to scale up the source to the best you can.

You might want to increase your budget, and if you are doing organic marketing, you might want to post more. If you don’t know what your primary source is, you can do an analysis of the past 12 months and make a plan on how you can triple down the source and get more clients.

Suppose you are spending on ads, triple the money you spend on ads. If you are doing content, you should triple the content and focus on that top one until you fully tap it out and move on to the second source.
